Today, many people seeking a more youthful appearance are turning to non-surgical facelift procedures as a less invasive alternative to traditional surgical methods. But what exactly does a non-surgical facelift entail, and how does it compare to surgery?

What is a nonsurgical facelift? It’s a procedure that achieves a more youthful appearance. It’s not the surgical procedure that defies gravity whereby the skin and deep tissues of the face are restored to the position they were in years past.

By definition, a nonsurgical facelift MUST achieve some tightening and brightening benefit, and it must either produce a direct benefit or give the illusion that years have been erased.

In this blog, Dr. Allan Wulc, a quadruple board-certified surgeon, explains the benefits and considerations of a non-surgical facelift.

Types of Non-Surgical Facelifts

A non-surgical facelift combines cosmetic treatments designed to combat the signs of aging without resorting to surgical intervention. Unlike traditional facelift surgeries that involve incisions, tissue manipulation, and downtime, non-surgical facelifts leverage innovative techniques and minimally invasive procedures to achieve similar, but more subtle, results.

The primary goal of a non-surgical facelift is to address common signs of aging—such as fine lines, wrinkles, sagging skin, and loss of facial volume—using non-invasive or minimally invasive methods.

By administering a combination of cosmetic injectables, skin rejuvenation therapies, and advanced technologies, non-surgical facelifts aim to restore youthful contours, enhance skin texture, and revitalize overall facial appearance. Some procedures may include:

Skin Brightening treatments

Topical Treatments: Utilizing skincare products containing ingredients like retinoids, pentapeptides, AHAs (alpha hydroxy acids), and vitamin C to promote collagen production, improve skin texture, and reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

Microneedling: Microneedling is a minimally invasive procedure that involves creating tiny punctures in the skin with fine needles to stimulate collagen production and enhance skin elasticity. Microneedling can be combined with platelet-rich plasma (PRP) or exosomes for added rejuvenation benefits.

Skin tightening treatments

Radiofrequency (RF) Microneedling: This advanced technique combines microneedling with radiofrequency energy to deliver targeted heat to the deeper layers of the skin. RF microneedling promotes collagen remodeling and tissue tightening, resulting in a lifted, rejuvenated appearance. When paired with PRP or exosomes, RF microneedling can optimize tissue regeneration and accelerate healing.

“Space” lifting with toxins and fillers

Botox and Fillers: Injectable treatments such as BotoxR, XeominR, or DysportR are commonly used to relax muscles that cause wrinkles, sometimes achieving a lift of the brows and a tightening in the neck and temporarily eliminating crows’ feet and other wrinkles. Toxin benefits typically lare present for 3 to six months.

Dermal fillers such as the Restylane line of products by Galderma, the RHA products by Teosyal, and the Juvederm line of products by AbbVie restore volume to areas of the face that have lost fullness due to aging producing expansion and when desired can achieve a lift of certain areas of the face such as the brows or the neck and lower face.

The product needs to be injected carefully and works by weakening muscles in the face that pull down thereby allowing the lifting muscles of the face to work more effectively. One of these products is actually named Lyft!

What to Expect from a Non-Surgical Facelift

One of the most appealing aspects of non-surgical facelifts is the minimal downtime and relatively quick recovery compared to surgical procedures. However, it’s important to have realistic expectations regarding your results and how quickly you’ll see them.

Results Timeline of a Non-Surgical Facelift

While some improvements may be noticeable immediately after treatment, most patients can expect to see gradual improvements in their skin’s texture, tone, and overall appearance over several weeks following a non-surgical facelift as the skin undergoes natural healing and collagen remodeling. Results vary, so it’s best to consult with your doctor prior to deciding that that’s the right procedure for you.

Continued upkeep of these noninvasive treatments every few months will help enhance results over time—with optimal outcomes typically lasting several months to a year.

Risks Associated with Non-Surgical Facelifts

While non-surgical facelifts carry fewer risks than surgical procedures, potential side effects such as redness, swelling, bruising, or allergic reactions may occur, especially with injectable treatments. It’s vital to discuss any concerns with your provider before undergoing treatment.

Who Should Consider a Non-Surgical Facelift?

Non-surgical facelifts are best for those seeking subtle improvements in their facial appearance without undergoing surgery. These procedures are ideal for addressing early signs of aging like fine lines, wrinkles, and mild skin laxity. Again, be sure to consult with a qualified cosmetic surgeon or dermatologist to determine the most suitable treatment plan based on your individual needs and goals.

A Non-Surgical Facelift Procedure to Avoid

While non-surgical facelift options are diverse, some treatments may offer limited benefits or pose higher risks:

Thread Lifts: Thread lifts are temporary and can lead to complications such as thread visibility or migration. They do not provide long-lasting results compared to other non-surgical procedures, they are expensive, and most of our patients who get them–always elsewhere–wish they hadn’t wasted their money unless they were interested in a very very temporary benefit.

Is a Non-Surgical Facelift Right for You?

A non-surgical facelift can be an excellent option for those seeking subtle facial rejuvenation but want to avoid surgery. By understanding the available treatments, managing expectations, and consulting with a qualified provider, individuals can achieve natural-looking results and maintain a youthful appearance for years.
