Filler Correction

FILLER CORRECTION IN PHILADELPHIA, PA

The botched lip job—it’s an easy-to-spot look. The notorious puffy “pillow” lip is a look that makes everyone secretly grateful they didn’t purchase that last minute flash deal for Juvederm. But while lips often get a bad rap for being overdone, facial fillers in other areas of the face, such as underneath the eyes, the chin, and the cheeks, can also go awry.

Luckily, patients who end up with botched fillers don’t have to live with the negative effects of their treatment for the full life of the filler, thanks to the filler correction procedure. At W Cosmetic Surgery in Philadelphia,Dr. Allan Wulc, MD FACS, and his staff take pride in their ability to reverse the unfortunate effects of a bad filler job. Dr. Wulc is a board-certified surgeon known for providing exceptional care to his patients for every procedure he offers.

WHAT IS FILLER CORRECTION?

Injections of Juvederm, Restylane, and other popular dermal fillers made with HA (hyaluronic acid) can be done in any med spa with very little regulation. This lack of oversight often leaves patients in the hands of an inexperienced or undertrained practitioner. In rare cases, unskilled injectors can cause serious complications to the patient’s health. More often, however, the consequences are purely cosmetic. If the practitioner does not inject the filler in the proper location or injects too much, the patient can be left with lumps, asymmetrical results, and an overall unnatural, “just had work done” look. These patients may benefit from dermal filler reversal and re-injection (if desired) with a skilled, board-certified plastic surgeon.

WHO IS A GOOD CANDIDATE FOR DERMAL FILLER CORRECTION?

Anyone who has had under eye fillers, lip fillers, chin fillers, or any other hyaluronic acid (HA) fillers in the face and is unhappy with the results may be a good candidate for dermal filler correction and filler dissolving. Ideal candidates should be in good overall health with a positive outlook. Patients who have had their unflattering injections for several months already may want to let the filler dissipate naturally, but anyone who feels self-conscious about how their fillers look may want to consider this procedure for immediate improvement.

THE CONSULTATION FOR FACIAL FILLER REMOVAL

Patients will need to schedule an initial consultation at our Philadelphia office before moving forward with dermal filler correction. During the consultation with Dr. Wulc, patients will be able to discuss their goals for the treatment and their desired outcome. The doctor will assess the area where the patient would like to have the filler removed and discuss options to have the filler corrected through the injectable hyaluronidase treatment. Patients will have the opportunity to ask the doctor any questions they have about the treatment and what to expect. Dr. Wulc can recommend complementary treatments if the patient is interested, including re-injection after filler reversal, skin rejuvenation treatments, or Botox Cosmetic, depending on the patient’s needs.

FILLER CORRECTION: WHAT TO EXPECT

Dissolving unwanted fillers is simple, safe, and effective. It is performed using an injectable substance known as hyaluronidase. This substance is injected underneath the skin through a small needle placed in the area of the filler to be removed. To ensure comfort during the injection process, the patient sometimes requires a local anesthetic for this treatment. Results of the treatment can be seen within minutes after injection. The hyaluronidase continues to do its work for up to three days after the procedure. While injections most often do not need to be repeated, sometimes this is necessary to dissolve all of the filler.

Patients who wish to have non-HA fillers removed such as Radiesse, Sculptra, and others, may be candidates to receive a steroid injection to reverse the effects to a certain extent. However, the only way to truly remove non-hyaluronic acid fillers is to allow them to be naturally absorbed by the body.

RECOVERY FROM FILLER REVERSAL

After the treatment is complete, patients can return to their everyday activities. There is no downtime associated with filler reversal, and side effects are typically mild and associated with any injectable treatment, such as minor redness, swelling, and bruising at the injection site. Filler correction Philadelphia patients often return to work or other obligations right away after treatment.

HOW DO I CHOOSE THE RIGHT SURGEON FOR DERMAL FILLER REVERSAL?

Choosing the right plastic surgeon to perform filler correction is the most important step in the process. Do your research and make sure all your candidates are board-certified facial plastic surgeons or dermatologists with plenty of experience. It is important to vet the candidates and to look at pictures of past patients who have had a similar procedure. This is a necessary step in making sure you receive the results you are spending your precious resources on.

CAN YOU “UNDO” FILLERS?

Yes, but only specific fillers can be “undone.” Fillers made with hyaluronic acids, such as Juvederm, Restylane, and other HA fillers can be corrected and dissolved using hyaluronidase. However, other non-HA fillers typically require the body to absorb them naturally, and little can be done to remove them right away.

ARE DERMAL FILLERS SAFE?

While dermal fillers are FDA-approved and typically safe and effective when administered by a qualified medical professional, they can be misused. When they are not performed by a reputable and board-certified dermatologist or plastic surgeon, they may not produce the optimal results. Thus, many patients seek to have these procedures corrected following a poor result.

WHO CAN HAVE FILLER CORRECTION DONE?

Individuals who have had HA filler treatments (Juvederm, Restylane, and other fillers made with hyaluronic acid) in the lips, tear troughs, facial lines, chin creases, and/or cheek creases who wish to have the filler removed are eligible for filler reversal.

WHAT ARE THE MOST COMMON PROBLEMS WITH FILLERS?

Under eye filler work, especially in the tear trough, requires a high level of expertise. This procedure can easily go awry as dermal fillers can create a lumpy appearance if the injector is not experienced. The most common problem with lip fillers is an overstated, unnatural look. This typically occurs when an inexperienced skincare professional or doctor overfills the lips. Dr. Wulc is able to correct the excessive volume caused by too much filler.

WHAT’S IN FACIAL FILLERS?

Facial fillers like Juvederm, Restylane, and Belotero are made up of hyaluronic acid (HA). This is naturally produced by the body, but HA production decreases with age. HA fillers are most often used to soften wrinkles, augment the lips, and create a more full and sculpted look to the upper cheeks. HA fillers differ in their consistency and longevity, and there are now several HA fillers designed for specific parts of the face.

IS HYALURONIDASE FDA-APPROVED?

There are several pharmaceuticals including Vitrase, Hydase, and others which all use hyaluronidase as the main active ingredient. These drugs all have FDA approval. Before moving forward with filler reversal, make sure that the doctor you choose uses an FDA-approved version of hyaluronidase.

IS FILLER CORRECTION SAFE AND EFFECTIVE?

Yes, when performed on HA fillers, filler correction is a safe and highly effective way to remove unwanted fillers. Juvederm, Restylane, and other HA fillers can be quickly and easily dissolved using hyaluronidase. It is important to have this procedure done by a reputable, board-certified plastic surgeon with a high level of training and years of experience. Your surgeon should know how to expertly inject fillers in order to properly administer filler correction.

CAN TEAR TROUGH FILLERS BE REMOVED?

Yes, the tear troughs are often filled using hyaluronic acid. Therefore, they can be dissolved using hyaluronidase. It is always important to have fillers removed by an experienced and reputable plastic surgeon or dermatologist.

IS DERMAL FILLER REVERSAL PAINFUL?

No, filler reversal or correction shouldn’t hurt. Dr. Wulc combines the hyaluronidase with lidocaine, a local anesthetic, to keep any discomfort to a bare minimum. Patients with allergies to lidocaine should share this information with Dr. Wulc during the initial consultation.

CAN BOTOX BE REMOVED?

No. Botox Cosmetic and Dysport are injectable medications affecting the facial muscles, effective at temporarily reducing wrinkles, smile lines, and frown lines. Once the medication is injected, it cannot be removed or neutralized. However, the results of these treatments typically fade in 3-4 months.
