October is Breast Cancer Awareness month. While our practice does not perform breast reconstruction procedures, we very frequently see cancer patients and survivors seeking skincare options.

Breast cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy, hormone therapy, or targeted therapies for breast cancer may find that some of these drugs cause changes in the skin. These visible changes can make patients extremely self-conscious, in addition to making the skin appear pallid, pimply, flaky, dry, and aged.

Supporting breast cancer patients and research is an issue near and dear to the hearts of Dr. Wulc and Carol Wulc. In addition to supporting cancer research and organizations such as the Maureen Klein Foundation, we wanted to find a way to directly help patients as they go through treatment. Although there are many top tier cancer treatments centers in our area, there are few that provide skincare in a safe, medically supervised facility for patients who are going through or have previously gone through cancer treatment. We established an Oncologic Skincare Program at our practice to fill this need.

Gina Veith, our licensed esthetician, has taken advanced courses in the treatment of cancer patients and survivors, and creates an individualized plan to help mitigate some of the effects of these therapies on the skin. Our practice is one of the few in the U.S. to offer this type of treatment, and we are proud to provide guidance to patients through their treatments and thereafter. We encourage everyone to talk to their primary care doctor about appropriate cancer screening. To find out more about cancer screening recommendations and age-appropriate testing, please visit the CDC website.
