Today, The Doctors TV featured Juvederm Voluma™ XC, the brand new FDA approved facial filler.

This is an exciting new development for almost everyone that needs volume in their face, especially if they don’t want to go to the operating room to have fat liposuctioned from one spot, then processed and refined and placed strategically in their face.

Voluma is a hyaluronic acid gel, similar to it’s siblings: Juvederm Ultra and Ultraplus (and its competing product Restylane). The difference is that Voluma is specifically approved for volumization in the cheek area and is specially formulated so that it is long lasting. In fact, in the FDA PIVOT trial, the filler lasted up to two years! Hyaluronic acids are naturally occurring substances (they are found in all connective tissue, your joints, and inside your eyes), and have little potential to cause allergic problems.

I was honored to be part of the very first wave of physicians in Philadelphia to have access to Voluma. It’s a great product. It is easy to inject, relatively painless for our patients, and it provides an instantaneous correction. Think of it like a cheek implant, without surgery, that lasts for up to two years (in my experience, all hyaluronic acids in the cheeks last more than two years—up to five!). It rejuvenates and even has some anti-gravity effects!

We’ll be testing whether that’s indeed the case in several studies we are doing, but the results we’ve seen do show that there is improvement in facial contours, and in restoring the smooth, graceful heart-shape of the cheek.
