Winter weather is never kind to our skin. Those frigid temps, the increased wind, and even the heat in your house can leave skin dry, rough and can cause damage. However, there are some things that you can do to keep our skin soft, moisturized and glowing. Here’s my Top 4 Face Saving Tips for 2017.

1. Sunscreen is a must every day, even in winter. Even though the strength of the UVB (burning) rays diminish slightly in winter months, the UVA (aging) rays are still the same strength. So it is important to protect your skin from those harmful rays. I’m a little biased but I love our EltaMD sunscreen.

2. Hydrate from within. It’s important that you keep your body hydrated so drink plenty of water all winter. The skin is our largest organ, and just like any other part of the body, it is made up of cells. Skin cells are made up of water. Drinking water not only keeps your skin cells hydrated, but keeps them functioning properly.

3. Mosturize- In addition to water, a great moisturizer is needed to hydrate skin on the inside and out. Many over-the-counter, drugstore moisturizers contain “fillers” that can actually strip your skin of the moisture you need. At W Skin Studio, we have several moisturizers that contain both a humectant (ingredients that draw moisture into the skin) and occlusive (ingredients that trap moisture within your skin. It’s possible that you any need something a little more emollient in the winter months. I would be happy to customize the right products for your skin when you schedule an appointment.

4. Treatment – My final winter tip involves two patient favorites, Dermaplaning and Microdermabrasion. During the winter, the top layer of your skin can build up dead cells, leaving it looking dry and wrinkled. Moisturizers can’t penetrate this thick outer layer (known medically as the Stratum Corneum). Plan to schedule a dermaplaning or microdermabrasion treatment in the office.
I can remove the thick layer of dead skin with either treatment, with no downtime. Both can restore your youthful glow (and allow the moisturizers to do their job better).

My wish for the New Year is that the clear, bright days of winter bring a rosy glow to your cheeks. I’m happy to help you maintain it! Schedule your appointment with me today.
